The Children Parliament was founded on March 31st, 2003. It is comprised of 440 children between the age of 6 and 18 who are representatives of all the schools in Stara Zagora. Evgeni Zhelev, the Mayor of Stara Zagora, is its patron.

The Children Parliament works on different programs such as “Children of Bulgaria”, “Prevention”, and “A World for Children”, organized by the General Assembly of UN.

The main topics, the members encounter in their work are education, rights and protection of children, the freedom of one’s thoughts, and the regard of peace as a supreme good.

The Children Parliament is divided into 11 groups according to the members’ interests: European integration, ecology, journalism, culture, computer science, photography, music, law, sports, folklore and health.

 

The children from the Children Parliament participate in international competitions, exhibitions, discussions, forums, debates, mathematical competitions, projects, summer camps, charities and campaigns of the Bulgarian Red Cross.  
 

The Children Parliament of Stara Zagora has received a certificate from the international organization “Children World” under the patronage of the Swiss Queen Silvia.
Nelson Mandela, the world-famous fighter for human rights, is an honourable member of this organization.

The Children Parliament was given a special reward for its participation in the International Book Fair, which was held in Tampa, Florida (the USA). They presented a play based on the fairy tale “Grandpa Lifts a Turnip” and a book consisting of 50 illustrations on different Bulgarian tales.

The members of the Children Parliament have friends from 36 countries from all over the world.

The children from the Children Parliament want:
- to be equal in rights partners when it comes to solving the problems of children from both the town and the rest of the country;
- to play an active role in the building of a better world for all children worldwide;
- to be well-deserved citizens of Bulgaria, Europe and the World.
