Republic of Bulgaria is situated on the Balkan Peninsula in the
Southeastern part of Europe.

Territory - 110,993.6 sq. km
Population - 8,191 million inhabitants
Capital – Sofia
Head of state – President
Head of government - Prime minister
Legislature - National Assembly, with 240 members
elected to 4-year terms
Religion - Orthodox Christianity
Administratively Bulgaria is divided into 28 districts, which
are constituted of 262 municipalities.
There are 240 towns, inhabited by 5,6 million inhabitants and
5099 villages with a total population of 2,6 million inhabitants.

- The establishment of the First Bulgarian state.
The 9th century – The accepting Orthodox
Christianity as the state religion and the brothers Cyril
and Methodius gave the Slavic alphabet to the world. Bulgaria
became the center of Slavonic culture.
1878 - Liberation (from the 500-years-long
period of Turkish slavery).
After 1878, for different periods of time,
Bulgaria was “constitutional monarchy", "people's
republic", "socialist state" and a "parliamentarian
republic". During that period Bulgaria had 4 kings,
47 parliaments and 88 governments.
After 1989 - The changes in Central and
Eastern Europe made it possible for Bulgaria to develop
as a market economy and to build a strong civil society
based on democratic principles. |
